Cleveland, USA, Apr 15 (efe-epa).- Victor Oladipo scored 32 points to lead the Indiana Pacers to a shock Game 1 victory at reigning Eastern Conference champions the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday.
Oladipo scored twice as many points as any of his teammates as the fifth seeded Pacers won 98-80 in the opening game of the first round of the playoffs.
Myles Turner, Bojan Bogdanovic and Lance Stephenson all scored in double figures to support Oladipo.
“It was a good road win, but it was just one game, though. That’s the beauty of the playoffs. One game means absolutely nothing”, Oladipo said after the game.
The defeat was the first time the Cavaliers have lost in the playoffs first in eight years.
It was also the first time LeBron James has lost a game at this stage of the postseason since 2012.
James did everything he could, putting up 24 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists, his 20th career triple-double.
He did not receive enough support though, with only Larry Nance Jr and JR Smith breaking the 10-point barrier, although Kevin Love did grab 17 rebounds.
Sunday night represented quite a turn around for Indiana, who were swept aside 4-0 by Cleveland in last year’s playoffs.
With Oladipo among their ranks, this Pacers team is a different prospect altogether.
They were in control throughout, enjoying a 21-point lead at one stage in the first quarter, which they were able to extend to 23 in the third.
The finalists in the last three NBA Championship series, number four seeds Cleveland are sure to bounce back and give the Pacers a sterner test.
“They’re going to come with fire, with a punch. We have to be ready for it, and we have to take our game to another level”, Oladipo said.
Game two of the best-of-seven series will take place on Wednesday at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.
